Debian. It was in August 1993 when Ian Murdock began work on a new operating system that would be made openly, in line with the spirit of Linux and GNU. He sent out an open invitation to other software developers asking them to contribute to a software distribution based on the Linux kernel, which was relatively new at the time. Debian was intended to be created carefully and conscientiously, and to be maintained and supported with the same care, embracing open design, contributions and support from the free software community. Debian is one of the most popular and influential Linux distributions around. It's known for strict adherence to the Unix and free software philosophies, the abundance of options it provides the user, and for being the base of many other distributions, like Ubuntu, etc. A classic among classics.
